The Community Trust in Rural Industries Project: 12 month update

This video reveals insights into the drivers of community trust and acceptance for the rural industries sector. The results indicate that trust in rural industries is high—Australians believe fishers, farmers and foresters play an important role in society and are a vital part of Australia’s history. However, there are areas of community uncertainty that present risks and opportunities for the sector. These key insights are being fed back into the sector as important areas to monitor, maintain, and build upon.

Yamana Gold and the Social Licence to Operate Index provided by VoconiQ

This presentation is by Aaron Steeghs (Director, Health, Safety and Sustainable Development at Yamana Gold Inc), and discusses the Social Licence to Operate (SLO) index used by Yamana Gold, and how this has helped them to achieve important social outcomes surrounding their mining operations. The SLO index is provided by Voconiq, and our very own Kieren and Ana-Lucia are mentioned in the video, as we help the company transform community sentiment into actionable insights.

Energy News AU: VoconiQ - Putting the science in social licence

This video is a recording of an interview with our CEO, Dr Kieren Moffat, by Energy News AU. The following is a snippet of their promotional description: Each year global firm EY publishes its annual risk report highlighting some of the biggest risks to resource companies, and it seems every year social licence to operate is at the top of that list. Australian pioneer Voconiq says there has never been a more important time to discuss how industry operates and rethink the way companies make connections with the communities and stakeholders they work with. The pioneering consultant puts the science into social licence. The Voconiq team has redefined the meaning of social licence to operate, helping customers to harness the relational mechanisms that underpin it.

Moffat & Zhang 2014: The paths to social licence to operate: An integrative model explaining community acceptance of mining

Abstract: We propose that to understand how a social licence to operate in mining is granted and maintained, we need to take account of the processes mining companies use to engage with local communities. The present research measured and modelled the critical elements of social licence by conducting a longitudinal study in an Australian mining region. The results of path analyses showed that building trust with local communities was crucial for mining companies to obtain and maintain a social licence to operate. The mining operation's negative impacts on social infrastructure, community members' perceived contact quality and procedural fairness in dealing with company personnel significantly affected the community's acceptance of the mining operation through inferred trustworthiness of the company. Our results highlight the importance of fair treatment and high-quality engagement of mining companies with communities, alongside mitigation of operational impacts, in securing and holding a social licence to operate.

Santiago, Demajorovic, Rossetto & Luke 2021: Understanding the fundamentals of the Social Licence to Operate: Its evolution, current state of development and future avenues for research

Abstract: The field of studies on social licence to operate (SLO) has grown considerably over the past two decades, leading to the emergence of new approaches, models, and theoretical development. This paper aims to organise, map, and analyse the evolution of SLO over its years of existence. We seek to understand the theoretical body that supports the concept; the rationality of the adopted trajectories for its scientific development; and the most influential studies that have guided these trajectories. A multi-method approach was applied in the procedure adopted to map the evolution of SLO, analysing international academic publications over the last 24 years (1996–2019). This has been achieved through a systematic, longitudinal literature review using citation and co- citation analysis; bibliometric techniques and social network analysis, combined with a thematic analysis of the complete articles... ICMM ステークホルダー調査ツールキット

Description: Best practice guidelines for measuring and monitoring stakeholder relationships in the mining and metals industry resources sector.

The Stakeholder Research Toolkit provides step-by-step guidelines for companies seeking to measure and monitor their reputation among all stakeholder groups. Specifically, the toolkit provides a useful methodology for companies seeking to work collaboratively with stakeholders in order to understand the key drivers of reputation. This provides a mechanism for companies to incorporate and understand the perspectives of their stakeholders regarding company and industry performance. The toolkit has been designed to provide users with clear instructions on how to develop and apply meaningful survey methods for use with their stakeholders, and specifically local communities. This also includes incorporating a set of common metrics, which can support the measurement and monitoring of reputation over time at local, national and global scales.

Community Resilience During and After Covid-19: What role for the mining industry?

Description: The mining industry is inextricably linked to the fortunes and futures of the communities that live alongside its operations. When change, shocks or significant events occur that effect these communities, the industry can play a significant role in supporting them to endure, bounce back and even accelerate development progress. This document, published in 2021, helps the mining industry to consider a broad definition of community resilience to mean 'the capacity of communities to respond, adapt, and thrive regardless of challenge or context' and provides a starting point for new approaches to building resilience.
